How to Remove Foul Odors from Your Fridge

If your refrigerator loses power or remains off for a long time, it will usually develop a horrible smell that results from spoiled foods. Getting rid of the odor can become anightmare, as rubbing and scrubbing might remove the stains, but not the lingering smell.  Do not despair, however, if your refrigerator develops a bad smell because there are ways to eliminate it.

Below are proven methods for removing bad odors from refrigerators in an easy and inexpensive way:

  1. Remove all items from your fridge. Separate and throw away spoiled food products because they will contain an ecosystem full of microorganisms that can spread to other foods. Put the good food in a cooler while you clean the refrigerator to make sure they don’t get spoiled during the cleaning process, too.
  2. Keep track of the expiration dates of your food.  Label them with the date you bought or prepared them, so you will be able to calculate when it’s no longer safe to eat them.  By following this method, you will know when to discard expired goods before they start to rot and smell inside the fridge.
  3. Clean spills. Use soapy water when you clean spilled sauces or liquid leaks. These spills can become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Also make sure to remove all the stains.
  4. Use fresh lemon as a natural refrigerator freshener. Cut lemons in half and place them throughout the various compartments of your fridge to immediately freshen them and keep your fridge odor-free for a few days.
  5. Use baking soda. Get rid of odors by spreading a box of baking soda over a baking sheet and placing it in your fridge. You can also keep the baking soda inside its box and place it inside the refrigerator for three days. You will start to notice an improvement in the smell.
  6. Use charcoal or coffee grounds. Put the charcoal or coffee grounds in bowls and leave them on different shelves of the refrigerator. They will absorb the bad smells within a few days.

By following these steps, you can quickly enjoy an odor-free refrigerator.  Stick to natural products to avoid putting your food in direct contact with chemicals, which will ensure the safety of you and your family.
