Preparing Your Home for the Winter
Posted by alanandheather in Home Improvement, Homeowner Tips on November 7, 2013
The winter months can be a huge pain if you and your home are not ready. Snow, freezing temperatures, and longer nights can cause you to worry if you failed to prepare your home in time for winter. That is why it is important to make sure that everything is winterized ahead of time, so you, your family, and your home can enjoy the coming months without any risks.
To help you make your home ready for winter, here are a few useful tips you should follow:
- Know where your pipes are, so you can easily shut off your water if needed. This will prevent your pipes from freezing when snow comes. If you don’t know how to protect your pipes, they can burst and cause major damage to your home. Ask your plumber for help if you don’t know where your pipes are or how to turn them off.
- Prepare your heating system. Winter weather can hit quickly, so you want to be sure your heating system is functioning properly, so it will be ready when it’s time to turn it on. Also be sure your furnaces and chimneys are clear.
- Check for branches above your roof and trim them down. This will prevent weak branches from falling on your roof and causing damage due to the weight of snow, ice, and wind.
- Clean your gutters and drain pipes. Remove dead leaves, branches, and other debris that may clog the waterway. This will ensure that melting snow and ice can freely flow down the drainpipes and not clog up your roof.
- Check for leaks inside the house and block them. Leaks can easily let the cold outdoor wind in and the cozy and warm indoor air out. This will cause your heater to have to work harder in order to maintain a warm atmosphere, which can be expensive. Seal leaks and cracks in doorways and windows ahead of time to be sure your house is well-insulated.
- Install storm windows. Replace your window screens with storm windows to add an additional layer of protection and insulation.
Once you prepare your home for the coming winter months, you can then sit back and relax in front of the fireplace with a nice hot cup of chocolate in hand.

Installing Water Tanks at Home
Posted by alanandheather in Home Improvement, Homeowner Tips on November 5, 2013
Rain water tanks are considered to be the smartest method of saving water for later use. What’s great is that they are not just for gardens, but can also be used for other household tasks, such as flushing toilets and washing clothes.
To make rainwater drinkable, all you have to do is invest a little money into a water purifying system, and then you can start taking advantage of nature’s renewable source of water. Water tanks can be installed in every home and many different sizes are available. You should consider the amount of rain that you receive in your area as well as your roof’s capacity to hold water if you’re considering placing your take above your house. Both of these factors will help you choose the appropriate size tank for your home.
The great news is that you don’t need a professional to install a water tank. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps:
- Plan for the location of the tank. This is a very significant detail. Consider its accessibility and proximity to a downpipe. When a water tank gets full, it can weigh as much as a small car, so the location must be large enough for a strong base to be installed. The location should also match the type of water tank you have, whether that be a vertical, horizontal, or cone-bottom type.
- Clean the tank with water and dish soap. Remove any soap and dirt by thoroughly rinsing out the tank with a garden house.
- Create the rainwater connections. Inlet hole and over flow holes should be positioned to fit your location. These holes can be cut using a key hole saw or jigsaw. Disconnect the existing down pipe and redirect it using a combination of pipes and elbows of 45 and 90 degrees. To avoid dirt, grime, and other sediment caught in gutters, a filter device should be attached. This will prevent tank water from becoming contaminated. Mark the pipes so you can put them back into their original position, take them apart, spread on PVC pipe primer and adhesive, and put them back together.

Oklahoma City One of Top US Cities for Veterans to Find Jobs
Posted by alanandheather in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Community on November 1, 2013
Fighting for our country is a very honorable job and veterans of war are proud to have served their country. However, once soldiers choose to retire and go on living their civilian lives, it can be hard to keep up with the demands of daily life. Many veterans throughout the country are finding it difficult to land jobs after returning from duty, which creates a stressful situation for both them and their families. Currently, the overall unemployment rate for veterans is two percent higher than the national average and almost 20 percent for veterans under the age of 25.
In March 2011, the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation started Hiring our Heroes, a nationwide initiative that aims to assist veterans, transitioning service members, and their spouses in looking for employment. To date, more than 20,000 veterans have found a job through the program.
Recently, Hiring Our Heroes announced a list of the top 10 best states where veterans can find a job, and Oklahoma City was ranked number four in the country.

Maintaining Your Granite Countertops
Posted by alanandheather in Home Improvement, Homeowner Tips on October 31, 2013
Granite is is formed from volcanic magma and is one of the hardest natural stones on earth. It has a reputation for being a great building stone and is commonly installed in homes as kitchen countertops. It is a durable material that can resist heat and endure years of normal wear and tear. Aside from its durability, it ranges in color and pattern, providing a beautiful aesthetic appeal.
Granite does, however, require regular maintenance. In addition to regular cleaning, it should also be properly sealed because stains can be difficult to remove from granite. It is also very prone to cracking.
Professional granite installers recommend resealing of granite countertops every three years. To preserve the quality of your marble countertops, refrain from setting glasses, knives, or hot pans directly on them. Use pads or chopping boards underneath kitchen utensils to prevent stains. Manage spills by wiping them with a dry towel. To prevent permanent stains and discoloration, make it a habit to clean spills right away. Do not allow citrus fruits, pure vinegar, bleaches, or alcohol products to have direct contact with granite because the chemical reaction between them can make the surface dull. Always inspect the countertop to make sure there is no cracking or shifting, especially around the edges. Furthermore, to maintain the gleam of the granite, it is important to polish it regularly.
To keep the granite countertop clean, do not utilize usual household cleaners because most of them are too harsh for the material or may contain high pH, which can scratch, pit, and etch the surface of the stone. Use a cleaning product that has a neutral pH level and a microfiber cloth to reduce leaving excess fibers on the counter. Clean the countertop according to the directions stated on the container of the cleaning product. For stains that are oily, make a solution made of flour or baking soda and 5 tablespoons of dish soap. Place the dressing right on top of the stain and cover it with plastic wrap overnight. It is fine to add a little water to make it easier to spread.

OKC YWCA Plans to Build New Shelter
Posted by alanandheather in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Community on October 25, 2013
Many people who have been caught in the middle of a crime or a life-threatening dilemma often need help. Safety is a major issue and people must know how to protect themselves against those who try to do them harm.
A lot of women in Oklahoma City who have experienced violence have turned to the YWCA in order to stay safe. The YWCA Oklahoma City is a nonprofit organization that aims to empower and support women, as well as protect them from domestic violence and sexual assault. For many years, the organization has worked to protect women and children against predators.
Because of the increasing number of women and children helped by the YWCA, the current shelter that houses them is almost full. That is why the YWCA plans to build a new shelter to accommodate more of the people who turn to them for help. The women’s organization has already raised the $15 million necessary to build a bigger shelter. It will have 120 beds, more than twice as the existing shelter, which has only 52 beds. The YWCA plans to have the groundbreaking this fall.

Flu Shots Offered to OKC Seniors
Posted by alanandheather in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City Community, Oklahoma City Real Estate on October 18, 2013
There are many instances in which the flu can lead to hospitalization and even death. Those who fail to strengthen their body’s immune system are usually more prone to flu-related ailments. This is especially true for seniors who already deal with other illnesses and body complications.
Now that we are entering the cold months, flu cases are on the rise, and one way of fighting it off is to get a flu vaccine shot. In Oklahoma City, health officials are encouraging all seniors citizens to get a flu shot, which are available at health departments, pharmacies, and even retail stores.
Three kinds of vaccines are available to seniors: the trivalent flu vaccine, quadrivalent flu vaccine, and high-dose vaccine. The trivalent flu vaccine is protects against three of the most common strains of the flu virus, while the quadrivalent flu vaccine protects against four. Seniors ages 65 and up are recommended to have the higher-dose flu shot.
Seniors who have healthcare plans and Medicare can have their flu shots covered by insurance.
